Hanoi Welcomes 24 Million Tourists in 2023

About 24 million tourists have visited Hanoi this year, showing a significant annual growth of 27%, according to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Tourism.

This includes four million international visitors, a remarkable year-on-year increase of 266.7%, and 20 million domestic tourists, representing a 16.3% increase compared to the previous year and accounting for 91% of the 2019 figures.

The estimated tourism revenue for the city in 2023 is approximately VND87.65 trillion (US$3.65 billion), a 45.5% increase compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the hotel sector’s average room occupancy rate is expected to reach 58.7% this year, a 20.1% increase compared to the previous year.

The year 2023 has been a successful year for Hanoi’s tourism industry following the Covid-19 pandemic, as it received three prestigious awards in September: Asia’s Leading City Destination 2023, Asia’s Leading City Break Destination 2023, and Asia’s Leading City Tourist Board. This is the first time Hanoi has been honored with the Asia’s Leading City Tourist Board award.

In October, Hanoi was crowned the World’s Best Golf City Destination 2023 at the 10th World Golf Awards, surpassing famous cities like Paris and New York in terms of golf tourism.

In addition, Hanoi ranked 17th among 25 renowned travel destinations and third among the top 20 culinary destinations for food enthusiasts, as voted by travelers on TripAdvisor.

Dang Huong Giang, Director of the city’s Department of Tourism, attributed this success to the collective efforts of the entire system, including authorities, businesses, and locals.

The highlight of Hanoi’s tourism achievements this year is the successful implementation of digital transformation and technology in tourism management, as well as the development of new tourism products. For example, Hanoi has established a database software for the entire tourism industry at www.dulich.myhanoi.vn, digitized the data system for agricultural and rural tourism, and created a multilingual digital tourism map of Hanoi.

Moreover, to promote its night economy, Hanoi recently introduced 15 night tours, aimed at enhancing tourists’ travel experiences and encouraging them to stay longer and spend more.

In the upcoming period, Hanoi will continue to promote various types of tourism based on the unique strengths of each area, including wellness and trekking tourism in Soc Son district, community tourism focused on healthcare in Ba Vi and Soc Son districts, and adventure tourism featuring hot air balloons in Tay Ho, Long Bien, and Son Tay districts, among others.

By 2024, the city aims to welcome approximately 26.5 million tourists, including five million international arrivals.
